THE CONNECTION NOTES

Small changes. Better WiFi.

A practical way to find what is slowing your connection and make improvements you can measure.

Start with a fair comparison

Run a test near your router with background downloads paused. Then repeat from the place you normally work or relax. If performance changes sharply by room, coverage or interference may matter more than your internet plan.

Give your router breathing room

Place it in an open, central, elevated position. Thick walls, metal cabinets, and appliances can weaken radio signals. Moving it a short distance can be more useful than buying a faster plan.

Compare bands and Ethernet

When your equipment supports them, 5 GHz and 6 GHz can offer more capacity nearby; 2.4 GHz can reach further but is often busier. A wired test helps separate wireless issues from your broadband connection. Device support and local radio rules vary.

Look for competing traffic

Game updates, backups, cameras, and streaming devices share capacity. Pause them briefly and compare results. If latency rises sharply while someone uploads, queueing may be affecting calls and games.

Repeat before deciding

Test at a few different times. Compare with the plan’s advertised rates and the provider’s own diagnostic guidance. Restart the router if appropriate, check cable connections, and keep approved firmware updated. Avoid factory resets unless you know how to restore the configuration.

Keep the context

A VPN, a distant test endpoint, browser power saving, and a busy server can all lower a result. One test alone cannot identify the cause. See how our test works before making a purchase or changing providers.
